SoundCloud Track Review: Hidden Mothers - 'The Longest Journey Yet'

Joe Clayton (No Studio) recording Hidden Mothers - ‘The Longest Journey Yet’.

It would be easy to misjudge Hidden Mothers (Sheffield, UK) on the basis of their band name. Personally, I expected a pure Black Metal band but what you get here as a listener is a whole other tale.

The track opens with an almost Bring Me The Horizon style female chant to draw you into a blissful sense of ease. Descriptive.

Hidden Mothers are nothing like BMTH in the slightest and you only realise that by continuing listening to the 'The Longest Journey Yet'. The drum rhythms swift and soar whilst the guitar arrangements sound to have a Cult of Luna and Downfall of Gaia influence. The sounds also signal to an interest and obsession with instrumentation, which reminded me of Mono (Tokyo, Japan).

And then the Black Metal influence kicks in fuelled by Steffan Benham’s intense, extreme guttural vocalisations. At this early stage of the track, even a seasoned Black Metal listener is taken aback due to how the stage was set from the outset.

The EP will be officially released towards the end of this year. This track was recorded by Joe Clayton of No Studio (Manchester, UK) —also of Pijn and Curse These Metal Hands fame.
