Final Coil - 'Persistence Of Memory' Review

"An alt-rock band with progressive overtones, Final Coil are the link between the twisted harmonies of Alice in Chains and the rhythmic pulse of Tool. Our debut album, Persistence of Memory, is out now via WormHoleDeath Records". As you can imagine from reading that above my expectations are raised high due to being a fan of both Alice in chains and tool, lets see whats these guys do.

Final coil have a mixture of sounds and styles of music and its implemented in their songs individually so each song has its own feel, The underlying "stoner doom" groove with "Corruption" and tones of the guitar sounding varied in songs like "Dying" which has a country feel to it and "Myopic" sounding alike to U2(early) prove the influences and variety contribute to their own sound but i am not hearing the "TOOL" element at all so far.

The soundscapes created are pleasant and minimalist (Failed light) the albums feel gets sinister and darker tones with songs like "spider feet" and "lost hope" starting to tell more of story crafted well by the guys immersing you into a sadness, soon kicking you back out of it with "Moths to the Flame" bringing the groove back but the sinister vibe is still there building to something which is "In Silent Reproach" this one feels like the album has been building up to.... BUT unfortunately it just did not click with me i was expecting aggression or more the intense side of the band which i did not get.

Ending on "Alienation" really enjoyed this feel of this song it very much felt like a ending track with a good level of prog and finality and the almost 80s sounding synths added a nice element to it and fades away.

Overview: The album surprised and disappointed me due to the comparison to "TOOL" and "Alice in Chains" it raised my expectations too high. But all in all a good listen and has some great tracks and moments. My main criticism it was too minimalist at times and did not progress into a intense or climatic sections which the songs sounded like the were building into so it made songs too repetitive at times, vocally very monotone but i think it works fine tbh i really liked the high vocal but only heard it in one song (more of that in next album please!). I liked this album and would listen again but it feels a little empty and it seems the best is yet to come from these guys.
